General Raymond Odierno, the most senior military chief in Baghdad, has written to the Secretary of State for Defence to express his 'sincere gratitude' for the RAF’s commitment in Iraq. Prince Charles presented the 'Millie' awards last evening. He said: "This evening has given us the opportunity to meet the best of the best, the bravest of the brave, but let us not forget that many members of our Armed Forces are far away from their families, working in austere, challenging and often dangerous environments.
When a civilian pilot became blinded by a stoke while in the air it was the team at RAF Linton-on-Ouse that came to the rescue. Wg Cdr Gerrard, Chief Flying Instructor at Linton said: "I think this pilot was fortunate to be guided in by an RAF team effort. For my part, I am very glad to help a fellow aviator in distress."
Two schoolboy teams have jointly won the the RAF's Schools Aerospace Challenge to design an aircraft to replace the Tucano. The Chief examiner said, "Their designs had cost, adaptability and the environment as their core. Both winning entries were most impressive".
Last night at the RAF Club SAC Scott Ferguson from RAF Lossiemouth scooped the top prize for his photograph 'Landing Zone'. He said, "I was surprised at winning. Mine was an opportunist image".
Wing Commander Andy Green, holder of the world land speed record, is now to attempt to break it in a car that can go 'faster than a bullet out of a hand gun'. Bloodhound is powered by a rocket bolted to a Typhoon engine.
